In ancient times, the Demon King Hiranyakashyap gets rewarded with a boon of Lord Brahma that made him nearly unbeatable. He started believing that he is the most powerful being in the universe and so he demanded that everyone worship him. Unfortunately, his own son Prahlad, a devout devotee of Lord Vishnu, refused to obey his father.
Then Hiranyakashyap attempted the murder of Prahalad but he failed so asked his sister, Holika to help him.
Holika was blessed with a cloak that protected her from fire so she sat with Prahalad on the fire to kill him. The plan didn’t work because instead of Prahalad, Holika got burned. This is because Prahalad started praying to his Lord after entering into the fire and He protected him.
This shows us the power of devotion towards the Lord and Prahalad is an exceptional example of devotion and belief.
Since then, we celebrate Holika dahan by lighting the bonfires on the night before Holi which tells us that we have to burn away the negativity around ourselves. On the next morning, we celebrate Holi with colors, music, and joy, reinforcing the victory of faith, truth, and righteousness.
How do we celebrate Holika Dahan?
On this festival, we all come together and celebrate the joy of the festival. All the Families and friends gathered around the bonfire, sang Holi songs, performed rituals, and shared Holi special sweets and snacks. Holika Dahan creates a sense of unity, companionship, and social harmony among people of all ages and backgrounds.
The bonfire of Holika Dahan is made from wood, dried leaves, twigs, cow dung cakes, and other combustible materials. We do praying, parikrama and other rituals near the bonfire and this is the main pooja of Holika Dahan.
After doing the ritual of Holika Dahan, families often get together for a special dinner to celebrate the occasion. During this dinner, we share joy, camaraderie, and delicious food with the other members. .
Some basic Holika Dahan special food items includes:
- It might include dishes made with Paneer, Soya Chaap, and Mushroom. It mostly includes vegetable curry, Paneer Sabzi, Soya Chaap, Mushroom curry, Roti, Naan, Chapati, Puri, rice, along with various chutneys and pickles.
- During Holi, in our houses we make Gujhiya, gulab jamun, jalebi, rasgulla, kheer, barfi, and many other traditional Indian desserts.
- As a starter, you will be offered with some popular snacks like samosas, pakoras, chaat, Golgappe, Aloo Tikki, Dahi Balle or Fruit Chaat.
- There are also some beverages like lassi, fruit juices, sherbets, or thandai for making the meal more appealing.
Rituals of Holika Dahan
In UP, we do Holika Poojan at our home as we make a huge Rangoli at our houses and we use Balgurian (Made from Cow’s dung) to do a little Holi Pooja. These Balgurians are made several days before Holi and we have to dry them in the sunlight. It has a spiritual significance as it is a part of the Holy Rituals.
We took every sweet and snack including Papad, chips and all types of namkeens and offered it to the Lord. After completing the pooja we can start playing Holi using colors with our loved ones.

- Take it Easy: It is traditionally advised for pregnant women to stay indoors, rest, and avoid using sharp objects like knives or needles.

- Watch the Clock: The sacred bonfire must only be lit after the eclipse ends at 06:47 PM. Do not perform the ritual during the eclipse window.
- Purify Yourself: Before lighting the fire, take a bath. If possible, mix a little Gangajal (holy water from the Ganges) into your bathwater.
- Make Your Offerings: During the puja, offer traditional items to the fire, such as raw cotton thread, turmeric pieces, moong dal, coconut, and flowers to symbolize letting go of negativity.

- Final Cleansing: After returning from the bonfire, take a quick bath to purify yourself once more.
