The History and story of Shri Dwarkadhish Temple

Do you know Dwarkadhish is “The Jagat Mandir”? 

The King Jagat Singh Rathod rebuilt the temple. It is located in the heart of Devbhoomi Dwarka it is a Vaishnav Temple.

As per ancient talks Lord Krishna left Mathura and then he came to Gujarat to create a new Kingdom. Later on,he named this place, Dwarka. Hence, it is believed that the Dwarkadhish Temple is the Home of Lord Krishna. It is also called “Harigraha”. Lord Krishna’s Grandson “Vairanabha” built this temple about 5 thousand years ago.

In 1472, Mehmud Begada demolished the original temple of Dwarkadhish. Later on, During the 15th-16th century, the Jagat Mandir was rebuilt. The current temple has a five-storey architecture along with the latest modification.

The Beauty of Dwarka Temple 

The Dwarkadhish Temple has the name Trilok Sundar Temple”. In all three Lokas, this Dham is the most beautiful temple. Another interesting story says that the current Dwarka is the seventh version of it. Also, itwas submerged six times in the sea. Lord Krishna made the original Dwarka city.  

The Garbgruh and Mandaps

The captivating Dwarka dham consists of Garbhgruh, Antarla Mandap, and Ardh Mandap. The huge Mandapa temple is open, all its sides rise above the height of five floors, backed by 60 pillars. You will see a tall pyramidal shikhar, which is about 165 feet high. The mandap roof has tiny bell-shaped crowns. 

The Divine Dwar

Dwarkadhish temple has two entrances. The door on the Southern side is “Swarg Dwar”. The other on the Northern side is “Moksh Dwar”. Gugalli Brahmins have been doing all the rituals and worship of Lord Dwarkadhish at the Dwarka temple. Lord Krishna brought the Gugalli Brahmins to conduct religious rituals in Dwarka.

When you enter from the “Swarg Dwar”, you will need to climb 56 steps to witness the Lord Dwarkadhish.

The Mesmerising idol of Dwarkadhish

The idol of Lord Dwarkadhish at the temple is in “Trivikram Swaroop”. In his four hands, the Lord has Shankh, Sudarshan Chakra, Gada, and Padma. Also, the idol is made using black marble and decorated with precious jewels. It adds endless charm to its divinity. 

While visiting Dwarka Temple, one needs to visit Beyt Dwarka temple. Thus, it is said that the Dwarkadhish darshan is incomplete without visiting there. This is the same place where Lord Krishna lived with Rukmani and met Sudama, his friend in Beyt Dwarka.

The best thing about Dwarka temple is that while visiting here, you can take blessings from Mahadev too. One of the 12 jyotirlingas of Mahadev, Nageshwar Jyotirlinga is in Dwarka.

The Flag of Dwarka Temple

You will see a huge swaying flag on top-right corner of Shikhara of the temple. Additionally, the flag is changed 3 times in the morning and 2 times in the evening. This flag depicts the Sun and the Moon, representing that as long as they exists, Krishna will always stay there.

Additionally, whenever the flag is changed, a huge flag ceremony is held. The family that sponsors the flag changes follows a traditional pooja and also feeds the Brahmins of Dwarka puri. The family brings back the flag to the temple by carrying it on the head with pomp, convoyed by dancing and singing. After that, they offer the new flag to the deity. Also, you can use any color except black. The flag needs to have a symbol of the sun and moon. 

What are the Aarti timings?

The temple is open every day from 6:00 AM to 1:00 PM and then closed. In the evening, it is again open from 5:00 PM to 9:30 PM.

  • According to the legend, the idol of Lord Dwarkadhish has a magnetic charm. It can attract all the metal objects towards it. This is something that makes this temple mystical and fascinating. 
  • It is a Pushtimarg temple. So, it follows the lessons and rituals of Vallabhacharya, the popular Hindu saint and philosopher of the 15th century. Vallabhacharya proposed the philosophy of Shuddhadvaita, or pure non-dualism, it took people towards the devotion of Lord Krishna.
  • According to the ancient talks, the famous devotee of Lord Krishna, Meera bai was merged with Krishna’s idol here. You will find a memorial within the temple, dedicated to Meera bai’s visit and devotion.

  • Lord Krishna’s weapon Sudarshan Chakra can be seen in this temple. It is auspicious if you catch the Sudarshan chakra in the temple shrine during your visit.
  • As per the ancient texts, Lord Krishna left his 16 Kalas or Divine Powers on earth. Thus, it is imbibe in the Dwarkadhish idol of the temple.

Dwarka Nagri is accessible from almost all the cities of Gujarat. It has a properly developed road, rail, and air transportation facilities. 
By Air: 

Jamnagar is the nearby airport of Dwarka, it is about 137 km away from the town. You can also take a flight from Porabandar Airport. To reach the temple from the airport, you can take an auto rickshaw, taxis, or public transport buses.

By Train:

You can visit Dwarka by train. From the station, you can take auto rickshaws or taxis to reach the temple is around 2 km.

By Road: 

You can reach Dwarka temple via your own vehicle or daily buses from popular cities like Ahmedabad, Rajkot, and Jamnagar.
