The Dhanteras Story

As per the legend, the story is related to the epic Samundra Manthan. The gods and demons were trying to get the exile from the ocean. Lord Dhanvantari, the originator of Ayurveda, appeared from the ocean. He came with a kalash of the Amrit on this day. Since, it is celebrated as Dhanteras which is a festival of health, wealth, and prosperity.

Another popular story is related to an Astrology prediction. According to that King Hima’ son will be bitten by a snake. He will die on the 4^th day after getting married. On the 4^th day of his marriage, his wife made sure that her husband didn’t fall asleep. She placed all her precious ornaments with a bunch of gold and silver coins at the doorstep of their bedroom. Also, she lit lamps at the door, told stories, and sang many songs to keep the Prince from falling asleep.

Later on, Lord Yama- the Lord of death veiled himself as a traitor. The Lord took a step towards the Prince’s chambers. The brightness of the lamps and jewellery captivated him. He couldn’t enter the chamber, so he climbed on the top of the gold coins. Later, he sat there for the whole night. Lord Yama listened to the stories and songs sung by the Prince’s wife. With the Sun rising, the traitor left without making any noise. The prince’s wife saved his life with her intelligence and wit.

This is why buying gold is considered auspicious on Dhanteras muhurat. A strong belief is that it will come back in a higher amount if bought on this day.

Lighting the Yamdeep

A special thing that we do on Dhanteras is ‘Deep Dan’. We pray to Lord Yamraj to prevent our family from any unfortunate accident. We keep a diya as an offering to Lord Yamraj. Also, the Diya is made with wheat flour by the main female of the house. Also, it is a ‘Chaumukhi Diya’ so, make sure it must have 4 batis made from cotton only. 

Goddess Lakshmi’s arrival on earth

According to the ancient talk, once, Lord Vishnu was talking to Goddess Lakshmi. Then, he said that no one should get trapped in the charm of earthly attractions. Even after that, once, she landed in the sugarcane field of a farmer and drank the sweet sugarcane juice there. Lord Vishnu got angry and asked Maa Lakshmi to do labour work at the farmer’s field for 12 years.

During this time, the farmer got good fortune, prosperity and wealth. After that Maa Lakshmi revealed her identity and then the farmer asked her to stay. Then, Goddess Lakshmi was impressed with Farmer’s dedication, love, and affection. She promised him to visit the earth every year on the day of Dhanteras festival. She asked him to light a lamp for her on Dhanteras and since then we have been doing the same. 

Lord Kuber’s Blessings x 13

We do worship Lord Kuber on Dhan trayodashi by buying gold and precious metals. Do you know why? The blessings become 13 times on Dhanteras. This is because Lord Kuber is the lord of wealth.

Pradosh Kaal Poojan

During Pradosh Kaal, the dhanteras Poojan takes place. This holy time starts half an hour before sunset and goes on for more than an hour after it. We do worship Maa Lakshmi with Lord Ganesh, Lord Kuber, and Lord Dhanwantri by chanting mantras and energize Mahalakshmi Yantra. Also, we do aarti and recite Chalisa like Lakshmi Chalisa and Dhanwantri Chalisa.
