According to Shiv Puran, Ujjain was Avantika nagri is one of the “Saptpuris of India.”
Once there was a huge devotee of Mahadev, Maharshi Vedpriy. He was a Brahmin and completely devoted to Lord Shiv. He lived there with his 4 sons and they were also devotees of Lord Shiv. Every day, they used to make Parthiv Shivlinga and worship Mahadev with full devotion.
On the other side, there was an evil soul too..!! A demon named Dushan lived on Ratnamal Mountain. He impressed Lord Brahma through his Tapasya and worship, Brahma blessed him with a boon.

Due to that boon, Demon became powerful and started misusing the divine power by disturbing Brahmins. Dushan was too lost in pride, and he was arrogant. He wanted to end and destroy the life of the Brahmins of Avantika.

Moreover, he used to disrupt their worship and also stop them from doing spiritual activities. All these activities became the daily habits of the Demon. One day, he tried to do the same with Maharishi Vedpriy but this time, his tactics didn’t work.
When the Demon came closer to the Brahmins, Maharishi Vedpriy and his sons started worshipping Mahadev. They completely involved themselves in Shiv. They started calling out the name of Mahadev appeared from the Parthiv Shivlinga. Lord Shiv killed the Demon Dushan and saved the lives of his devotees.
Brahmins started praying to Mahadev and requested him to stay there forever to protect everyone from the evils. Mahadev agreed, since then the Divine Shivlinga is popular as Mahakaleshwar.

The Shivlinga of Mahakaleshwar is completely different due to the shringar. This ritual is done 4 times by the Poojaris of the Temple. After-all, The Mahakal Shivlinga is the only Shivlinga in the world that is south-facing.

In the north direction of the Shivlinga, you will find Nandi Maharaj, the biggest devotee and also savari of Mahadev. Also, the Garbhgriha is adorned with arcane silver plates. You will find beautifully carved idols of Goddess Parvati, Lord Ganesha, and Lord Kartikeya in the north, west, and east.

- Shri Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga temple is located on the bank of Shipra River. It is popular as Mokshdayini and Mahakal itself is the Moksh Dham.
- The Bhasma aarti of Ujjain has great significance. Mahakaleshwar is the only place where aarti is done using ashes. This Divine ritual took place at early morning 4 AM every day. To attend this, one had to pre-book their slot.
- In 2022, our Honorable Minister inaugurated the beautiful Mahakal Corridor. It is around 900 Meters long and situated near the Mahakal Temple. Above all, this divine Corridor is made of 350 Cr. It is the first part of the corridor, and soon the second part will be introduced. Currently, it is under construction with a huge budget of 450 Cr.
- According to the Surya Siddhanta, the Mahakal temple is at the center point. It is on the Cancer line that is the heart of India.

- Another special feature of the town is that Ujjain has only one King and he is Mahakal. No other King can stay there at night whether, he is the PM or CM of the state.
