Well, all the Mahadev devotees around the world visit this place every year. There are very few of them actually know the history. Being a Lord Shiv Devotee, I was always curious to know the history and guess what?

I have the information to share with you all..

The famous temple of Mahadev Kashi Vishwanth is the new one. The Adi Vishweshwar Temple is 2000 years old and was built under King Vikramaditya’s rule.

When Mohammad Gori harmed India, he tried to harm the original temple. Maan Singh I and Todar Mal under Ruler Akbar reconstructed it.. 

According to history, the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb ordered the destruction of the Vishweshwar temple in 1669. 

The Gyanvapi Mosque was constructed in 1678 at this place. Still, the Hindu pilgrims continued to visit the temple. The Maratha ruler Ahilyabai Holkar (Indore) constructed this temple in 1780.

This mesmerizing temple has three huge domes made of gold. It also has a huge and beautiful corridor. Maharaja Ranjeet Singh donated the gold that is used in Kashi Vishwanath. He was the king of Punjab in the 19th century.

The temple is also popular as the Golden Temple of Kashi. Our Honourable PM Narendra Modi has initiated the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor; it has been built-in 21 months for 700 crores. It covers an area of around 50 thousand square meters. 

The 4 Entrance

The Kashi Vishwanath corridor has 4 entrances known as Gate No. 1, 2, 3 and 4. It looks like the doors of Forts, each of these entrance doors is 32 feet high and 40 feet wide. The first Dwar is Ganga Dwar, and the second one is Kala Dwar. Next, the third is Pratishtha Dwar, and the fourth dwar is popular as Nivritti Dwar.

Let me tell you another amazing part of my visit. I saw the place where Vishweshwar Shivlinga is located. I have felt a depth of emotions while visiting there as Nandi Maharaj is standing facing the Vishweshwar Temple. 

Being a Mahadev Devotee, when I went near the nandi ji, my eyes were full of tears. I have visited many Shiv Temples but never seen that view. Nandi Ji is always near Shivalinga but in Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Varanasi is a huge distance between Shivlinga and Nandi ji.

It looks like Nandi ji is waiting for Mahadev and that captivated my heart.

  • Before visiting Kashi Vishwanath, the visitors must visit Kaal Bhairav Temple. You have to take his permission first as it is believed that he is the protector of Kashi.
  • While entering the Mahadev Temple, you can take blessings from Maa Durga idol with Lord Shiv on the left side. 
  • All cultural activities are held in the temple with music and dance programs.
  • On Mahashivratri, Thousands of Mahadev devotees come for the aarti during the night to pray to their Lord.
  • Every year, more than 7 million devotees visit Shri Kashi Vishwanath Dham. The honourable government has launched the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor project to protect the culture and heritage of the Kashi.
  • The closest Ghat to the temple is Dashashwamedh Ghat. It is located on the sides of Ganga River and Gate No. 1 of Kashi Vishwanath Temple. 
  • Make sure you do not carry any Camera and mobile phones. These things are not allowed
  • The Kashi Vishwanath ShivLing is in a slight rectangular space and there are several other Shivlingas in the temple premises. 
  • The Jyotirlinga is so beautiful; you will not take your eyes off it. 
  • The temple is open in the early hours of morning, around 2:30 AM. You can take Darshan only after 4 AM to 11 AM and 12 PM to 11 PM every day.

What you should wear in Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Varanasi?

Well, I prefer wearing traditional clothes during all my temple visits. 

It is mandatory to wear a traditional suit or saree for female and Kurta Pyjama or Dhoti-kurta for males. Make sure to dress yourself modestly and respect our culture. Also, cover your head while visiting the temple. 

Remove your shoes while entering the Kashi Vishwanath Dham.

Visitors who are not in proper outfits do not get entry into the temple. The Shiva Temple is a place of religious importance, so please keep its divinity. 

Best Time to Visit Vishweshwar Dham

You can visit there at any time of the year. Still, a visit from November to February can be considered the best. The temperature of Kashi typically ranges from 5-16 degrees Celsius during this time.

During summer, Varanasi experiences hot and extreme temperatures from 30 to 45 degrees Celsius. So that time it will be a little difficult to explore the place comfortably. You can still visit if you want.

Moreover, in the monsoon season there is always heavy rainfall. If you want to visit the temple, an early visit is best to avoid the queue.

How to reach the Temple?

Kashi Aka Varanasi is a popular city of UP and so there are several mediums of reaching there. 

The Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Varanasi is linked to railways and roads. So, you can decide that how you want to reach. Well, you can reach by flight, Train, bus or with your own vehicle. 

The nearest airport to Kashi is Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport in Babatpur. After that you can take a cab to cover the remaining distance of 25 km.

The nearby railway station is Varanasi City station, just 2 km away, Manduadih Station is 4 km. While the Varanasi Junction is 6 km, and Mughal Sarai junction is 17 km away. The Varanasi city has a well-connected transport system with various available options.

After reaching the station, you can easily get a cab or auto rickshaw to reach the temple. Additionally, you can visit with your own vehicle. To visit, you have to park your car at a distance because Kashi is better when you visit on foot.
